How to Check Blood Pressure at Home With a Free, Physician-Monitored Device

For the 70% of Americans 65 and older who live with hypertension, the ability to check blood pressure at home is crucial.

Hypertension wears away at blood vessels over time, and that increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Being able to check blood pressure at home helps limit those risks.

The benefits of using a device to check blood pressure at home

A blood pressure cuff offers fast, accurate readings that are automatically sent to providers without any extra steps for a patient or caregiver.

That ability to check blood pressure at home has many benefits, including:

  • Helping your physician determine whether your medication is working

  • Allowing your care team real-time information so they can modify care plans as needed

  • Reducing unnecessary in-person visits

  • Preventing white coat syndrome, which happens when your blood pressure reads at higher levels in a clinical setting than at home due to anxiety

The benefits of getting your blood pressure cuff through Pro+vide

A Pro+vide blood pressure cuff comes ready-to-use right out of the box, so you can check blood pressure at home in minutes — no smartphone, app, Bluetooth or WiFi needed. Patients on Medicare are also eligible to get a free cuff through Pro+vide, and we can get you set up in the system with details we already have, so there’s nothing to do on your end — except open the box and get started.

Pro+vide blood pressure cuffs are also equipped with:

  • A pulse management system

  • Irregular heartbeat indicator

How to use a home blood pressure monitor

Once you receive your Pro+vide cuff, you’re ready to check blood pressure at home.

The American Heart Association offers the following tips:

  • Don't smoke, drink caffeine or exercise within 30 minutes of measuring your blood pressure.

  • Empty your bladder and rest for 5 minutes before measuring.

  • Don't take the measurement over clothes.

  • Sit with your back straight and supported, feet flat on the floor and your legs uncrossed.

  • Place your arm on a flat surface with your upper arm at heart level.

  • Align the bottom of the cuff directly above the bend of the elbow as directed on your Pro+Vide packaging.

  • Measure at the same time every day.

  • Take two or three readings one minute apart and record the results.
